Walk 1:PIAN DI SPAGNA - Southern RouteDifficulty: easy Diff. in level : none Altitude: 200 m The Pian di Spagna is an alluvial plain at the northern end of Lake Como, enclosed by the Lepontine, Rhetic and Orobic Alps at the end of Valtellina and Valchiavenna valleys. The name goes back to the end of the 18th C, when the Spaniards, who controlled the borders of the territory of the Duchy of Milan, had already left and the Austrians had taken power. Until that time the area was known as Piano di Olonio. What is extraordinary about this marshland is the fact that it is one of the few humid zones of the whole Alps. Thus it is the ideal environment for many birds, especially migrant birds which find refuge and food before they cross the Alps.
