Walk 1:

PIAN DI SPAGNA - Southern Route

Difficulty: easy

Diff. in level : none

Altitude: 200 m
Recommended season: year-round
Start & Finish: Area verde Ponte del Passo

By car to the area verde from Piazza C. Battisti, Sorico (2 km): take the main road (SS340) to the north, cross Ponte del Passo-bridge and turn immediately to the right at the bar "Pian di Spagna". Towards the right at the junction (via Boschetto), just a few meters and the parking area is reached.

The Pian di Spagna is an alluvial plain at the northern end of Lake Como, enclosed by the Lepontine, Rhetic and Orobic Alps at the end of Valtellina and Valchiavenna valleys. The name goes back to the end of the 18th C, when the Spaniards, who controlled the borders of the territory of the Duchy of Milan, had already left and the Austrians had taken power. Until that time the area was known as Piano di Olonio. What is extraordinary about this marshland is the fact that it is one of the few humid zones of the whole Alps. Thus it is the ideal environment for many birds, especially migrant birds which find refuge and food before they cross the Alps.

A – BOSCHETTO/LA PUNTA

(Length: 5 km, duration: 1,5 h)

Walk to the right from the parking area, following the tarmac road parallel to the Mera River (Via Boschetto) for about 1 km. Turn left 200 m after the restaurant “Becchacino” on the track (sign “Percorso naturalistico Sud / Fabbrichetta / Foce Adda”) which leads into the acacia and poplar tree forest.

Follow the (better visible) path to the sign-pole and continue to the right till you reach the road to the “camper service”. Straight on between the two fences to “La Punta” at the northern end of the lake, a fine sandy beach with an excellent view. Return to the sign-post and turn right in order to reach the dirt road of Via dell’Alberone with a view over the vast cultivated fields.

Spiaggia La Punta

Turn left (sign “SS 340 / Foce Adda”) and then straight on till the Stallone (also Fortino d’Adda), a former Spanish outpost now used as stables. Walk straight on the tarmac road and turn to the left at the stop sign of Via Fabrichetta and return to the Area Verde.

Fiume Mera

B – THE MOUTH OF THE ADDA RIVER

(Length: 12,5 km, duration: 3 h)

Return to the junction and the stop sign from the parking area and turn to the right. Follow Via Fabbrichetta till the last houses, and then turn to the right (sign “Percorso Naturalistico Sud”). After 100 m the Fortino d’Adda is reached. Take the track to the left (sign “Ponte Borgofrancone/Foce Adda”) which leads through the fields after about 2 km to the bridge over the canal.

Just a few meters after the bridge, turn to the left (sign “Ponte sull’ Adda / Foce Adda parallel to the canal till a junction. Turn right, towards the “Cabina elettrica” (small transformer station). The road reaches the track which runs parallel to the river. Turn  right on the embankment towards the mouth of the river. On the way there are ponds, populated by amphibians and invertebrates. From a hut you can observe many species of aquatic birds.

Stay on the embankment so that the animals will not be disturbed and walk to the mouth of the Adda, a fantastic viewpoint on Lake Como and the surrounding mountains.

Return along the river, a straight line of about 3 km, till you reach the Adda road bridge.

On the way you can avoid a block destruction plant by taking the bicycle track close by. Turn left when you have reached the railway crossing by the bridge (sign “Ponte Borgofrancone”) and return on the same way as during the first part of the walk.

Once again over the canal, the long straight line, by the stallone right towards the tarmac, turning left at the end in order to reach the Area Verde.
